It’s time for a good
“Spring Sweep” to clean up the Sisseton community. The Sisseton Horizon’s
Project is looking for volunteers to help pick up litter on streets and
boulevards. If you’ve got an hour or two to help, join us at Drenttel Park at
5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12 or at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13. Bio-degradeable
bags will be provided thanks to Dakota Western, and latex gloves will be
distributed to all volunteers. Everyone who participates will get a certificate
for a burger at a participating restaurant. Come join the fun and help clean up
our community.
HJ ProVoice Partners with Venture
Vision "No Radio- No Computer-No Problem"
Venture Vision Cable Television Subscribers in the Sisseton
and Old Agency area now have the opportunity to access Native American
Programming on their television. For the past three years HJ ProVoice has been
streaming their unique programming (a blend of area sports & events, Native
American music and news and Classic Rock) worldwide from their offices in
Sisseton. Until recently their programming could only be heard on computers with
an internet connection and while the number hits and listeners have steadily
grown (Over 5,000 since Feb. 1st) HJ expects even faster growth through their
partnership with Venture Communications.
"We started HJ ProVoice as a production company to
offer the Tribe's Casino properties a local, Native American owned source for
Radio Ad Production." HJ Manager Harold Bernard said. "But, it wasn't
long until everyone was asking about Pow-Wow Music and when would the Tribe get
their own Radio Station back. Once you lose a station license it's almost
impossible to get another and even though a group recently filed an application
for a new station it's still years away from becoming a reality . . . if it ever
does. HJ ProVoice is on the air now! "I 'm proud of what we've been able to
accomplish with this technology," We've taken Native American music, sports
and news around the world, but now we can bring it back to the local area and
make it available to any home with in the area with Venture Vision. And I like
to think that with all the talk of people taking from the Tribe, this is my
opportunity to give something back that's positive. It's been over 6 years since
a daily broadcast of this nature was available to the Native American Community
in the Sisseton area. I believe that it's something the Native American
Community can be proud of…my dad taught me to pursue my dreams and never to
quit. Getting to this point hasn't been easy, but with the backing of loved ones
(some who have taken the Journey to the Spirit World) it's given me the push I
needed to pursue my dream of being a radio announcer, producer and manager in
the broadcasting field." Bernard also stated that, "Without good
people and the good Lord, I don't think this project would have happened and
even though HJ still has a long way to go, I hope that I can count on the
backing from my Tribal people to help continue bringing some of the best music
in the world into our homes and computers at work."
Rod Kusser with Venture Communications sees this as a
positive for everyone involved. "When we heard what HJ ProVoice was doing
and who their target audience was, we felt that airing HJ Pro Voice on our
digital TV system could be a win, win situation. We are excited to work with the
HJ Pro Voice people and feel that the programming is an added value to our
quality TV entertainment line-up."
HJ management is currently in negotiations with other cable
systems to add their programming. "We want this to be the first of
many." Bernard said.
Future plans for HJ include moving into a larger building
and adding more local shows to their programming schedule including a morning
talk show covering topics of interest in the area.
HJ ProVoice can be heard on TV channel 990 by Venture Vision
